Dear reader:

The following is a version of a paper that I gave recently at the London Arts-Based Research Centre conference on The Function of Humor. Since we are beginning The Miller’s Tale this week in the Chaucer Reading Challenge, and the paper begins with that tale, it seemed like a good time to publish this. This also is connected to earlier posts on the body in historical fiction that you may find in the archive. (See here and here.)
