Five Haikus
1
rotten pecans strewn
across the lawn, it must be
one more year passing
2
utterly silent
no hand rises, has any-
one done the reading?
3
first shred the cabbage
then make the peanut dressing
it’s almost salad
4
watching movies can
have this effect sometimes you
can’t rise from the couch
5
a haiku a day
is possibly a little
thing I could do now
The Stack of the Week
This week’s stack is
’s The Matterhorn. I just discovered this well-established newsletter recently, and I’ve become a bit obsessed. I found it via Kathleen’s other stack Yoga Culture, which will certainly feature in this space soon as well, and which is also brilliant. The Matterhorn is something of a world unto itself, and I have only just scratched the surface thus far: Kathleen writes about culture, fashion, literature, film, art, yoga, and more—all with an erudite but unpretentious ease. The newsletter also includes a podcast, as well as original fiction. It’s the “horn” of plenty. This is from her “about” page:The Matterhorn is a fiction: it is a peak that rises between two countries and cultures, creating faces that change in the light and through our experience or memories with them. It is the conglomerate of the millions of photographs and videos, the climbs, the skiing and eating in its vicinity, the many languages that vibrate off its rock each day. It is the passing of millions of years in its presence. At this peak, we create a story from all the layers of her brilliant life.
Her current September series, “Fashion as a Text,” is a great place to start:
Dive in, and revel in Kathleen’s eclectic intellect! You’ll be glad you did.
I’ll be back on Wednesday with more on Gulliver. Thanks for reading, from my fancy internet typewriter to yours.
Love the pecan haiku. I'm feeling that 'one year has passed' kind of feeling as I see and experience things around Basel at the start of fall. Now that it's my third time experiencing these things here, I start to forget - which year was it when this particular thing happened and comparing this seasonal change to others.
Thank you so much for the wonderful recommendation and write up. I am really humbled by the way you wrote about my work on The Matterhorn. It's such a pleasure to work on as well as to have you in our community.
